Chapter Thirteen

It was still dark when Nancy woke up to brew her first cup of tea. The leaves of the trees across the park below her looked shiny; a soft summer rain had cooled the temperature. A welcome relief after a stretch of hot weather that made London hardly bearable. She mechanically opened the cupboard, picked up the tin of Sichuan tea and boiled the kettle. Her eyes, still heavy with lack of sleep, could not quite focus. She consulted her BlackBerry – 4.45 AM. Pole had lost his cool and not called back. She had toyed for a moment with the idea of contacting Marsh but it was stupidly vindictive. Still, William’s life might be at stake.

She made tea, walked back into her lounge and stretched on her sofa. She could doze off perhaps. But her restless mind got the better of her. She moved to her sound system, selecting her favourite Philip Glass opera. The music was low but the first bar propelled her into another world of minimalist melodies yet rich with subtle romantic undertones. She stretched again on the sofa. This time her body relaxed. She let herself be carried away by the sound she enjoyed so much and for the first time in a very long time she wished she had comforting arms around her to sooth her.

Her mobile rang. Nancy woke up in a jolt. It was not yet 7am.

“Nancy?” asked a distraught voice.

“Speaking,” Nancy mumbled with a pang of anxiety. She did not want to hear what that voice had to say.

“It’s Paula, William’s PA,” the voice continued, barely holding back tears.

“My God. He has had an accident.” Nancy collapsed back on the sofa.

“Yes, he was hit by a car. He is in a bad way, in intensive care at St Thomas’s.”

“I’m on my way.” Nancy did not wait for an answer before hanging up. A cry swelled in her throat and her eyes watered. She had not felt this helpless since she had arrived in Paris in the late sixties – a long, very long, time. The furtive images and sounds of a bygone China materialised and dissolved almost instantly. The voice of her father telling her to hide, the arrival at Orly airport after weeks of travelling … She cast aside the blanket she had wrapped herself in away and stood up almost in a panic. She looked around, disorientated for an instant. Nancy walked into the bathroom and splashed her face with cold water. Her hand searched for the towel. She brought it to her face. The soft smell of clean linen soothed her. She breathed in the comforting sent of jasmine. She took a few minutes to collect her thoughts and get ready. Now was not the time to collapse. William needed her.

Stepping into St Thomas’s Accident and Emergency Department was like stepping into another world. The flow of people coming through was constant. The smell of disinfectant and human stench combined to give the waiting room its unmistakable odour.
